- Fuerteventura is very special; people who lived here can tell you.

There are several popular sentences in this island which say something like: “In –Fuerteventura you arrive crying and leave missing it” or first you don’t want to stay and then you don’t want to leave…

Most people don’t like –Fuerteventura at first, especially when it wasn’t their decision to come over but their wife or to work… Whatever the case, when it is not your own decision, most of the time you don’t like it…. Is there anything to do here? This is a desert? Where are the people?..

But once you have to move again, I can assure you that you start feeling bad and you don’t want to leave anymore and although you live in –Fuerteventura, every single time you leave the island for a couple of days, you start to think and you really need to get back to this wonderful island.

Spain Has The Most Blue Flag Beaches And Marinas In Europe

If you’re looking for sun, sea, sailing and sand this summer Spain has more to offer than most after being awarded 511 Blue Flags, more than any other European Country. Puerto Calero on the Canary Island of Lanzarote or Grandes Playas in -Fuerteventura retain their prized Blue Flag Status. The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

The eco label has been bestowed upon 3,550 beaches and marinas in 41 different countries across the world, with one in six going to Spain. The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches/marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services. In total 638 marinas have qualified for the award worldwide.
The Canaries have 35 beaches and 3 marinas that qualify to fly the Blue Flags. Most of them are located in Lanzarote, -Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. World Marine Guide list marinas on all the Canary Islands and the Balearics and have been awarded 63 flags for beaches and marinas.

The Best Places of Fuerteventura

Corralejo: ancient fishing village with a modernised town centre. There is one main street with a handful of short side streets that contain the majority of Shops.They are actually doing some construction work right now on high street in order to make the sidewalk even nicer as the pedestrinas feel even better while they are taking a walk. Worthwhile visiting for Restaurants and Bars are the music square, Calle La Iglesia, Muelle Chico, Paseo Maritimo (all 3 in the old town), Shopping Centre La Menara and surroundings (Centre of town) and Shopping Centre El Campanario.

But there certainly are some more gems on other locations, too many to list. Just stroll around and discover them. There are beautiful beaches with plenty of sports and leisure possibilities. The dunes ( a national park) at the south of the town are world famous and are one of the must-see items of Fuerteventura. The island of Lobos can be visited to enjoy nature, tranquillity and the small beach. There are regular ferries to Lanzarote.

El Cotillo: old port from the 17th century that now is a tourist area, which results in a particular atmosphere. El Cotillo has beautiful beaches. There are 2 harbours, the old one is in the middle of the village where you have really good restaurants and the new one is at the south of the village, surrounded by restaurants. Please visit El Toston, the little fortress which occasionally houses art exhibitions by local artists. The south beaches are a hot spot for surf freaks and the north beaches, a series of pretty lagoons, are superb for families. Some beaches further up north are visited by nudists (sorry, no pictures available).

Lajares: village between Corralejo and El Cotillo that has a local lace production which can be visited. From here you can start your walk to the Volcano “Bayuyo”. There are a few food and drink spots.

Villaverde: small agricultural village with a local museum of ethnic art “Rosalinda”. There are some good restaurants.

La Oliva: Capital of the municipality “La Oliva” where you can visit the ancient military headquarters “Casa de los Coroneles”, an agricultural museum “Museo del Grano” and a nice church.

Monarch Flights And Holidays Report Bookings Increase By 32%

Monarch Flights and Holidays report bookings since the start of the school holidays have increased by 32% year on year.

The Costa Blanca in Spain is the travel group’s most popular destination this summer, with sales up 216% over the same time last year.

Monarch attributed the boom in demand to dismal UK weather which has seen fed up families fleeing to warmer climates.

The group’s top selling destinations are:

Monarch Flights and Holidays managing director Liz Savage said: “We are seeing strong demand for both flights and holidays this summer, which has been assisted by the dismal weather in the UK and the bleak August forecast sending fed up Brits looking for warmer climes. “This year we are seeing that all inclusive holidays are proving hugely popular, with bookings up 60% YOY, especially with families, as they provide fantastic value for money and allow costs to be 'locked in' prior to travel.

Improvements to Facilities on the Islands Beaches

Corralejo’s beaches and facilities are to be improved to attract more visitors to the area, La Oliva council has announced. Families struggling through the sand with pushchairs will soon be a thing of the past as the council is installing wooden walk ways on the beaches of Corralejo, Viejo, Las Clavellinas, Muelle Chico and La Concha in El Cotillo.
The walk ways will be approximately 100 metres long and are made of pine and will aid access to the beaches in the area. Over the next few weeks other improvements will be taking shape. These include three new toilet blocks with changing rooms, two new first aid points, six outside showers, 105 new waste paper bins, five new life guard stations, bathing facilities for the disabled and fifty new benches.
The La Oliva council has stated that the new facilities were a priority as tourism is so important to the community and the beaches are one of the main attractions.

Lidl to open its first store in Fuerteventura, Canary islands

Lidl to open its first store in Fuerteventura
A sign that the island continues to attract new investment is seen with the announcement that the supermarket chain “Lidl” is to open a new store across the road from the Industrial Estate in Puerto del Rosario, Poligono Industrial Risco Prieto.
Work has already begun on the site and the store is due to open in May 2009. This will be the first of the company’s stores to be located on the island.

Fuerteventura Olive Oil

The likelihood of Fuerteventura becoming one of Spain’s top producers of olive oil has taken a big step closer due to the construction of an olive processing plant in Pozo Negro. The Almazar, which is Arabic for squeezing place, hopes to increase productivity in the very near future and local olive farmers are interested in being part of that growth.


Around forty farmers have expressed interest and a willingness to take part in this project and the Almazara is expected to produce up to 1,500 litres of olive oil from 10,000 kilos of olives.
The oil is made from three varieties of olive all of which have a very distinct volcanic taste. The islands Government is hoping that the production of oil will be a success and establish Fuerteventura as an important olive oil producer.
