Canary Islands Tourism Up 18.5% 2011

Tourism in the Canary Islands has increased this year by 18.5%ahead of most European destinations. The islands that include Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Gomera,La Palma and El Hierro received 9.2 million visitors from countries other than Mainland Spain in the first 11 months  making the Canaries Islands the third on the list of Spanish holiday regions, behind Catalonia with 13 million and very close to the Balearics with 10 million. Across Spain tourism is on average up 7.7% this year making the Canaries increase over twice the National average.

The reason for the above average performance has been attribuited to the Islands all year warm weather - an important consideration to families looking for guaranteed sunshine. In Fuerteventura an increase in flights from all major European markets such as the UK and also new emerging markets like Denmark and France have also attribuited to the increase. Latest tourism board figures for Fuerteventura also suggest a doubling of promotional spend for 2012 which will introduce the Island to those yet to visit its golden beaches. Estimates for the close of 2011 are over 2,000,000 visitors to Fuerteventura alone.

Unemployment in Fuerteventura Canary Islands has decreased by 2.5% in July 2011 thanks to the growing tourism industry.

The total number of unemployed people in Fuerteventura, an island within the province of Las Palmas has dropped by 2.5% according to Radio Television Canaria (RTVC). The increase in tourist numbers coming to Fuerteventura has been the main reason for the economic turn around. Most of the jobless who found a job in July were long term unemployed rather than just seasonal showing that the recovery is steadily improving for the longer term.


Pajara is where the unemployment decreased the most, 6% less than in June of this year but the effects can be felt in other areas also including Costa Calma, Caleta de Fuste and Corralejo where tourist occupation levels hit over 90% in July and are expected even higher in August 2011. The euro finally took a hit and dropped slightly against both the pound and dollar after Moody’s Investors Ser­vice cut the ratings of Portugal's long term government bond rating to Ba2 or junk, with a negative outlook. The euro fell below $1.44 on the dollar and traded on the 0.90 handle against sterling. The credit rating agency sin­gled out the insistence of European leaders on private bondholding taking part in the Greek bail-out as a reason for the downgrade, and also noted Portugal was likely to need a second bail-out before it could raise money in the capital markets.

The dollar weakened against most of its major counterparts on speculation the US jobless rate will remain ele­vated, delaying any tightening in monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. The greenback fell for the seventh time in eight days against the euro as economists said figures this week will show US companies added 100k workers in June, less than 200k cited by some analysts as the minimum needed to bring down unemployment. The nonfarm figures are due out on Friday. We have seen a small improvement in the dollar versus the euro in the UK early morning trading session after Moody’s cut Portugal’s debt levels to junk status.
